Tips for taking your own biometric photos

Follow these steps to get the best results

Distance from the camera while taking a passport photo

Mind the distance

Pose 4–6 feet (1–2 meters) from the camera. Use a timer to take your photo or have someone snap it for you.

passport photo posture: Straight ahead

Face the camera directly

Keep your head straight. Avoid tilting your body or looking away. Remember: portrait mode is not suitable for any ID photos.

Passport photo lighting

Ensure good lighting

Take your photos in daylight e.g., next to a bright window. Shadows on your face or in the background are not allowed.

What are the Australian passport photo requirements?

Passport photos in Australia must meet the specific requirements of the Australian government and pass the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards. To be sure your biometric photographs get 100% accepted by the authorities, ensure that they:

  • Have a plain white or light grey background
  • Are taken within 6 months before the application date
  • Measure between 35mm to 40mm in width and 45mm to 50mm in height
  • Are produced with dye sublimation method (not printed by an inkjet printer)
  • Present you with your head centred (32–36 mm of the picture’s height), eyes open, and mouth closed

Remember that your face and eyes must be fully visible. If you have facial piercings that cover the area around your nose, eyes, or mouth, it’s better to take them off for your photo. Keep a neutral facial expression and ensure you’ll submit a focused image.

You need to provide 2 identical photos that meet the specifications mentioned above. Ensure they’re good-quality colour prints.

Wear your casual, everyday clothes. Avoid light and white pieces of clothing not to blend with the picture’s background.

Head coverings are acceptable only for religious reasons. However, they must be plain and without any patterns.

Glasses are not allowed in Australian passport pictures. If medical reasons prevent you from removing your glasses, ensure the frames don’t obscure your eyes and that there are no reflections from the lenses. Vision impairments are NOT a sufficient reason for keeping your glasses during passport photo-taking.

Hearing aids are acceptable for everyone wearing them.

Baby passport photo guidelines

Generally, the Australian passport photo for children and babies must be compliant with all the official requirements. There's only one exception for infants (under the age of 3) who can have their mouths open for a passport photo.

Remember that the child must be the only person visible in the picture. No toys, objects, or other people can be seen within the photo’s frame.

Below we’re going to present you with some locations in Australia that offer passport photo-taking services. However, only a few provide baby passport photos. Take your child’s biometric photograph comfortably at home! How? Read on to learn more.

Where to get passport photos in Australia

Australian citizens can get their passport photo taken with the help of a professional photographer. Next-door photo shops and photo labs are also common choices. The most popular places that offer passport photo-taking services are:

  • Kmart Mall
  • Officeworks
  • Post office (Auspost)
  • Camera stores (for example, Ted’s Cameras)

Alternatively, to find the most suitable location, you can google “passport photos near me.”

Apart from taking a photo, you can also find locations that offer passport photo printing services. This way, you can prepare your own photograph and just print it in a place of your choice for a few dollars! Discover how to do it in the following paragraphs.

How much do Australian passport photos cost?

Prices for Australian passport photos vary depending on the location. In the table below, we compare the cost of passport photos taken from the places we’ve mentioned previously.

Australian passport photo location

Price for passport photos

Kmart Photo Centre

$0.10

Officeworks

$16.95

Auspost

$19.95

Ted’s Cameras

$19.95

How’s it possible that you can get your passport photos at Kmart for only $0.10? That’s the price for their printing service, so you need to provide them with already prepared pictures.

But how can you prepare your own passport photos? And most importantly, can you do that yourself at all? Read on to learn more!
